This article explains how to perform the VIN registration function on a 2024 Nissan Altima L34 using the LAUNCH X431 PRO3 V+ ELITE.
Under what circumstances is it necessary to perform the VIN Registration function:
1. This function uses a diagnostic tool to write the VIN into a designated ECU, ensuring the stored VIN matches the vehicle’s actual VIN and registering the control unit’s vehicle identity.
2. Perform this function when replacing the control unit with a new one, when its VIN information is lost, or when there is a VIN mismatch.
3. This function can clear VIN-related fault codes (such as "VIN not programmed" or "ID mismatch") after ruling out other issues like power supply or communication faults.
Tested Model: 2024 — NISSAN — ALTIMA L34
Supported equipment: X431 PRO series, X431 PRO3 series, X431 PRO5, and X431 PAD series, the current one for Demo is LAUNCH X431 PRO3 V+ ELITE.
Attention:
1. Before VIN registration, confirm the VIN matches the vehicle exactly, ensure P gear, ignition on, and stable battery voltage (external power supply recommended) to avoid registration failure or control unit data anomalies.
2. During the function, do not turn off ignition, disconnect the diagnostic tool, cut power, or interfere with control unit communication, as this may cause registration failure ordata anomalies.
3. After VIN registration, read the-VIN from the control unit to verify it was written successfully.
4. If VIN registration fails, do not retry repeatedly; check and fix control unit power supply, communication, and wiring issues before attempting again.
Operation Procedure:
1) Connect the SmarLink to the vehicle’s OBD port. In the X431 app, select [Local Diagnose] -> [NISSAN]. It is recommended to use Nissan vehicle diagnostic software version V46.24 or higher.
2) Choose [Manually Select] and select the vehicle model path.
3) Click [Smart Detection] on the topology map interface.
4) Click [ECM], DTC P1611–00 "ID Discord,immu-ECM" is detected. Click [ENTER].
5) Click [WORK SUPPORT] -> [Vin Registration]. Read the prompt, check the actual VIN against the identification plate, then click [OK].
6) The original VIN is displayed. Click [VIN] item to enter the inputinterface.
7) Read the prompt, then click the input box and enter the VIN. Confirm the VIN matches the vehicle’s actual VIN and click [Confirm].
8) Click [Execute] to perform the VIN registration.
9) On the [WORK SUPPORT] menu, choose [VIN Registration] again, click [OK] to re-enter the VIN registration interface and check whether the original VIN value matches the VIN entered during the previous step.
If they match, proceed to the next step; otherwise, return to previous steps and repeat the VIN registration function.
10) Choose [Clear Fault Code], click [Yes] and then [OK].
11) On the ECM menu interface, choose [Read Fault Code] to readu the ECM DTC information. We can see "No DTC" is displayed. VIN registration is successful.
