Use GM Tech II to adjust the headlights of Saab 9-3 DRL

GM TECH II with the Saab card is confirmed to be able to turn off the DRL headlights (daytime running lights) on a 2004 Saab 9-3, 2007 Saab 9-5 Aero etc. Here we go for guide and reviews.

Simple guide:

Without installing the Saab software, directly plug Tech II into the OBDII port of the Saab vehicle.

Insert Saab 32MB card into Tech II.

Run Tech II scanner.

In Diagnostic Mode:

Diag>2003>9-3 Sport

Body>Exterior Lighting and Horn

Low beam adjustments.

F0. Auto Low Beam also in Pos 0.

Change setting to NO

6 seconds later, lights flicker and go out. Exit.

Then:

Go to:

Fog Lights Front.

Change to Position 1 & 2 ROW (Rest of World) Program and Exit.

This will give you:

Pos 0 > No Lights

Pos1 > Fogs and 5 Watt Headlamp / Parking Light

Pos3 > Low Beam, High Beam, Manual Control of Fogs.

Review 1.  I used a tech 2 and I'm happy with the results.

Switch off - no headlights, normal gauge cluster.

Middle - fog lights only

On - normal headlights

Review 2 .

You can program the headlights off with the Tech II but the side markers and small running bulbs between the projectors will still be on even in the off position - at least on my 06 and 07 that's how it worked.

If you pull the DRL fuse, then with the light switch in the off position all of the lights on the car are off. Depending on how your headlights are currently programmed (3 settings on the Tech II), just pulling the fuse might not allow you to run just the fogs with the switch in the center position.

I've always used the Tech II in combination with pulling the fuse to get the lights to operate how I like.

  1. 2004 Saab 9-3

The headlights go on when the ignition is turned on.. the headlights go off when the ignition is turned off... there is a headlight switch which does nothing for the headlights.

How to do: I looked into a little further and found that on 2004 9-3's you do indeed need to take it to the dealer to have them to use Tech II to program the lights to the "Rest of World" setting. This will give you control over the headlights via the switch. No need to replace it.

You can't just pull the fuse as in other Saabs.

DRL are a safety feature because pedestrians see the car and don't jump in front of the car.  So consider leaving them alone.

If you turn your switch to off, some of the center console switch lights will go off (saves a bit) but your front fog lights (if installed) will be disabled until you turn the switch to on.  Off or on, the DRL lights stay on unless you do a Tech II change.

Enjoy!
